I started at TAFE

Day one was orientation.

The safe part. Setting expectations, syllabus, someone explaining where the bathrooms are.

Day two, they threw us straight into the deep end, and for me, that meant treading water in a language I didn't speak.

We're 3 weeks deep now.

Years in sales, marketing, business... I'd built a whole vocabulary for that world. None of it transfers here. Every subject lands like something foreign, and every so often I catch my mind wandering back to the old spaces.. boardrooms, customers, digital platforms... what could've been, if I'd stayed. I clock the drift fast now. Snap back. Eyes on the board.

I won't pretend what I'm learning beats what I learned in marketing and copywriting. There's no sexy case study here, no brand that rose from the ashes, no failure story with a tidy lesson wrapped around it. That's not what's on the menu.

What's on the menu instead is people. Real ones. Teachers and classmates both, and it turns out a good chunk of this room has already done time in the trenches... nurses, support workers, carers... They come loaded with stories.

Parents. In-laws. Patients they sat with at the end.

These aren't branding stories. Nobody's optimising a funnel. But they've got weight to them. Connection. Real stakes. Some of it's life-and-death stuff, told plain, like it's just Tuesday.

And somewhere in all that, I'm starting to find the meaning in it.

Here's the other thing I've clocked, looking around this room: I'm different from most of these people. Not better. Not worse. Different... different training, different resume, different scars.

But here's what gets me... unlike every marketing lecture hall or hustle-forum comment section I've sat in, this room is full of genuinely good people. Kind, without needing you to notice. Grounded. No ego riding shotgun. Nobody working an angle, nobody performing "better than you" in that particular tone marketers know so well. No vibes to manage. Just people.

And that's rare. That's worth naming.

It means we're not circling each other like competitors sniffing out weakness. We're pulling in the same direction... each one of us rooting for the next. That's a good place to be in.

Maybe the best kind there is.
